What I pack for plein air painting

The first time I packed up to go plein air painting, I spent a lot of time just figuring out what supplies to bring. I leaned on recommendations from other painters—and that was helpful—but over time, I’ve refined my kit into something that works for me.

If you’re interested in painting outdoors too, I thought I’d share a few things that might help you get started (or simplify your setup if you’ve already tried it).

🎒 First up: What’s in my plein air kit

In my newest video, I’m showing you exactly what’s in my plein air painting kit. Whether you're new to plein air or just looking to streamline your gear, this video gives you a peek into my setup.

🌿 Need a safer way to clean your brushes while traveling?
If you’re painting with oils but want to avoid solvents—especially when you’re on the go—this video shows what I use when traveling.

🎨 Want to carry fewer paints?
Painting with a limited palette gives you freedom. Once you understand how to mix a full range of colors using just the primaries, you don’t need to bring your whole studio with you. If you’re curious how to do that, my course Painting Realistic Landscapes with a Limited Palette will show you how.

Hope these tips and resources help you feel more confident painting outside—and lighten your load a bit, too.

See you out there!
