You won't learn this from YouTube

These days, it’s easy to find painting tutorials. A quick search on YouTube and you’ll find thousands of videos on every topic imaginable. And I think it’s great that so many people are sharing their love of painting.

But here’s the problem: most of my students come to me after months—or even years—of cobbling together tips and tricks from random videos.

And that can lead to a lot of frustration.

Why? Because watching bits and pieces never gives you the full picture.

One video might show you how to quickly paint a loose impressionistic tree. Another gives you a quick tip on clouds. A third explains a particular technique—but without context for when and why you’d use it.

Pretty soon, you’ve got a toolbox full of mismatched parts.

Kinda like the box of miscellaneous screws that I inherited from my father-in-law. Different threads, head shapes, etc., that are to me, bewildering. It's just easier to use my own screws that I know the usage for than trying dig around in that box to find something that will sorta work.

Likewise, YouTube videos often give you approaches and techniques, but no clear understanding for how they fit together (or if they even do).

That’s exactly why in all of my courses I teach the same METHOD (classical layering, not wet-on-wet or alla prima).

We follow the same 4 stages for painting landscapes (the same way I approach my own paintings).

Students learn about techniques, including how and when to use them.

Instead of a scattershot approach, students learn a clear, repeatable method and process for painting landscapes. Something they can use again, and again to successfully complete paintings. (Whether you're using oils, water mixable oils, or acrylics.)

That's one of the reasons I created Painting Dramatic Clouds 2.0.

The course builds your skills layer by layer, from understanding cloud structure and light, to mixing believable colors, to finishing a dramatic and luminous sky that makes your landscape come alive.

It’s not about guessing your way through a painting.

It’s about knowing what to do next—and why.

So if you’ve been hopping from video to video and still feel like something’s missing, this is your chance to finally put the pieces together.
